BMW problems

BMW was created into a carmaker back in 1917, although they started life out in manufacturing aircraft. A year later and all its efforts were put into building cars, and we can only thank that decision. Its very first car to enter production was the Dixi and is a far cry from the models we know and love from BMW today.

BMW problems

The company’s headquarters is in Munich, Bavaria and they also own the likes of MINI and Rolls-Royce, although the latter is still run in the UK, which is where the premium vehicles are also built.

As for the current BMW model range, their names have not changed in years, although their design has significantly. They have also added some new models over the years to cater for trending markets, such as SUVs.

Even though BMW is considered to be more of a premium brand when compared to the likes of Ford and Renault, they are not without their issues, and so in some cases certain models have to be recalled. One of the most recent was due to the Takata airbag problems.

We know that many of you have a BMW that has been causing you a few issues, and so we ask that you share them in the comments section below, who knows, maybe one of our readers will be able to help you.

I have a 2008 BMW X5 and water has started to leak through my sunroof. The worst thing is that the water got into the electric and now the vehicle will not start. If you are looking to get one of these older models, maybe consider going for the one without the sunroof.

Why is it that my 2009 BMW 528 randomly overheats? I have replaced the thermostat and flushed the cooling system, but the thing still overheats.

  • Ed

The transmission light on my 2009 BMW 330 stays on, I had the software reprogrammed, but still stays on. My local dealer believes that the gearbox will need to be replaced, am I missing something here?

  • Doug

I have a horrible rattle coming from the suspension on my 2003 BMW 318, and also the tyres have now started to wear unevenly. What would the the cause of this please?

  • Mark

My 2002 BMW 2 Series is loosing power and not accelerating, and I hear a strange noise from the rear of the car. I have heard from one person that it could be a fuel pump issue, although I know this had already been replaced just before I got the car a year ago.

  • Jenny

Why on earth will my 2004 BMW not be able to go over 25 miles per hour? There is also a loud whirring noise from under the bonnet.

  • Jeff

Recently had my X6 engine repaired, and now the engine will not start. The engine does turn over, but will not kick in.

  • Mike

I currently have a 2004 BMW X5 and for some reason there is a lot of wheel wobble. I have had the balancing checked, and all tyre pressures are ok. So what else could cause such an issue?

  • Kay

Has anyone had an issue with the steering on their BMW X3, as I was at a set of traffic lights and the power steering moved the wheels on their own? This sounds very strange to me, and also dangerous at the same time.

  • Tim

My 2004 BMW X5 seems to be lacking power, and have also noticed black sumo coming from the exhaust now. If I turn the engine on and off the power seems to return, but the smoke will not go away.

  • Merv

My 2003 BMW X3 has developed a fault with its alarm. When I lock the doors all is fine, but after several hours the alarm starts to go off. This is not an intermittent fault, as it happens all the time. It is for this very reason why I have now started to leave the car unlocked, which I know is not ideal, but I do not want to keep waking the neighbors up.

When traveling at speeds of just over 70 miles per hour I start to hear a loud scrapping noise from the front wheel, as it is hitting the front bumper. This does not happen when driving at slower speeds, just after hitting 70 miles per hour and above. I really am at a so of what it could be.

  • Jasmine

There are times when my 2004 BMW X5 completely lacks power the moment I start the engine, and also black smoke comes out. However, if I turn the engine off and on again everything goes back to normal and the car drives with no issue. I would say this happens about 3 in every 10 times i start the engine.

I first encountered a problem when I drove my 7-Series BMW and turned hard left, as there was a knocking. However, this is now happening every time I drive over 20 miles per hour. The noise does not sound as though the wheel bearing has gone, so could it be a CV joint?

  • Gerry

Please help, the boot on my BMW X5 keeps opening up all on its own, and so have had to tape it up for now, as this was happening while driving down the road. I do not want to take it to BMW because they will charge a small fortune, and so wondered what it is I should be looking for in order to fix the problem?

  • Niles

When trying to clear the screen on my 2005 BMW 5 Series, the washers seem very weak and does not reach the top pf the windscreen. Could there be a blockage, or is there an issue with the pump?

  • Erin

The radio in my BMW 3-Series has stopped working, and have checked the fuse, which is fine. Is there any other checks I can do, or am I looking at huge bill from BMW to get it repaired?

  • Shuan

How come the fuel gauge on my 2007 BMW 5 Series does not show that I have fuel in the tank? I did change the fuel sender, but still not working.

  • Damion

I can hear a strange buzzing noise when I turn my BMW 3-Series off. I have not taken it to the dealer yet, just in case it is something silly that I can repair myself.

  • David

Am I the only one getting a range of at least 70 per cent lower for the i8 than BMW suggests? No matter how many different driving styles I choose, it still does not make a difference.

  • Jenny

Why is it that I can hear a loud click noise from my BMW 7-Series when I drive slowly while taking a hard left? It gets very annoying and is very embarrassing while driving past people.

  • Doug

My BMW will not fully go to sleep, and so the battery will be flat by the morning. I have tried a system rest, but this never done anything, and there are no error coeds, so am confused as to what can be the cause.

  • Jake

I have checked the fuse for the radio in my BMW 3-Series because it no longer works, but it is fine. I now fear that the radio needs to be replaced. Is there something else I can check first before I look for a replacement?

  • Eric

No matter how many times I try, the passenger door just will not open on my 7 Series BMW. All the button lift up, you just cannot physically open the door with the handle.

  • Jacob

Why is it that when I press the accelerator on my 2005 BMW 3 Series the gearbox starts to jerk? It does not happen all the time, but does seem to be getting progressively worse.

  • Harry

Why is it that my 2005 Series 3 BMW will no longer go over 25 miles per hour? There is also a very strange whining noise coming from under the bonnet which i have no idea what it could be.

  • Wren

I’ve just learned that the drivers airbag on my 2001 BMW Series 3 might not deploy correctly, which does not fill me wit confidence, as I am still waiting for the date to get the inflator checked and if needed replaced.
