Kia problems

Kia Motors was founded back in June 1944 and is the oldest carmaker in South Korea, although is not the largest, as that title goes to Hyundai. Kia never started life out making cars, instead they made bicycle parts and steel tubing by hand.

Kia problems

The next step was to make motorcycles, but it was not until 1974 that the company got into making cars. They left the auto industry for a while after that, but got back into the game in 1986 thanks to a partnership with Ford.

Since then things have been going rather well for Kia, thanks to having a base of operations in the U.S. and various parts of Europe. The company is much loved in the UK thanks to offering their customers a lot of car for less money than some of its European rivals.

Kia currently has a large range of models, some of which include the Picanto, Rio, Soul, Cee’d, Optima, Sportage, the Sorrento and many more.

One of the last Kia recalls in the UK was last year, due to an issue with the seatbelts in the Sportage. It is good to see not many recalls for this brand in the United kingdom, although they are still not without their problems, which we are sure owners will be vocal about below.

For some reason my 2013 Kia Optima has started to pull to one side, which came as a surprise to me the first time it happened, as it almost caused me to crash into an oncoming car. It really takes it out of me keeping the car straight, and what I find annoying is that Kia say they are not aware of the issue, yet I know this to be a common problem.

  • Jock

The engine recently blew on my 2014 Kia Sorento, and while it is still under warranty, Kia will not honour it because I had the changed the oil myself just the once. Surely the company should be a little more lenient?

  • jenny

I have a 2007 Kia Ceed and its battery keeps draining. I have checked the battery and all seems fine, so could it be an issue with the alternator?

  • Michael

Why is it that the radio in my 2014 Kia Sportage will not turn off, could have been worked in wrong, or is there a setting that needs to be changed?

  • Janet

I cannot believe my 2002 Kia Sedona will not longer start after its my aux belt snapped. I changed the belt, but still not luck, please help.

  • Lenny

Why does the brake pedal on my 2005 Kia Sedona go straight to the floor, although it does go hard once I press the pedal several a few times. The brake cylinders are new and I cannot see any fluid leaks, so what could be the cause?

  • Simon

Why does my 2008 Kia Rio cut out and sound rough while cold, but seems fine once the engine has had time to warm up a little? The air filter, spark plugs, leads and also the o2 sensor has been changed.

  • Danny

I have a 2009 Kia Proceed and for some reason it has started to jerk and not run as smooth as it once did. There are also occasions when the engine stalls, which can become annoying and dangerous. I have taken it to my local garage on several occasions, but have been unable to locate the issue.

  • Charlotte

The temp gauge on my 2003 Kia Carens stopped working, and so had it replaced. However, the gauge still does not work and I am now wondering if it has its own separate fuse, although I do find that very hard to believe?

  • Tina

For some strange reason the radio, clock and door mirrors on my 2006 Kia Sedona no longer work. I have looked at the fuses, and they seem to be ok, so what on earth could cause all three to go at the same time?

  • Jules

I’ve been having a few issue with the cruise control on my 2005 Kia Sorrento, and so wondered if anyone would be able to tell me how to install the OEM cruise control?

  • Lucy

I have noticed my Kia Magentas is leaking fluid from its gearbox. A friend of mine was able to get underneath the car and said that the leak is coming is caused by a radiator leak that has caused some rust under the car. I really do not know how true this is, and if so what my next cause of action will be.

  • Mark

Why is it that the brake pedal on my Kia Sedona goes flat to the floor, but when I pump it the pedal gets harder again? I have already bleed the brakes, and there is no longer any air in the system, and the rear cylinders have also been replaced.

  • Paul

Just got 05 sportage crdi and although i like the car its got an annoying ratchet type noise excellerating softly in 3 rd and 4 th gear possible transe case box. Mechinic has no clue. Is there a recall on transfer boxes

  • Peter

After checking the UK DVSA website there is no such recall for this model or year.

  • Jane

The power outlets on my Hyundai Sedona are no longer working, although what I find strange is the fact that all fuses are fine. I now wonder if there is some sort of waiting fault, but how do I find this out for myself?

  • Julie Riggs

My dad has a 2015 Kia Sorento 4×4 and a few weeks it lost power while he was driving. The garage had it for 4 days and could find nothing wrong with it. It happened again the other day, has anyone else experienced this problem

  • Sal

I was told that the front wheel bearings need to be replaced on my 2002 Kia Sedona, and so just wondered how easy it would be to tackle the job myself, and if there were any specialist tools needed?

  • Oliver

I have not started my Kia Sedona in moe than 2 years. I have made certain the battery is fully charged, yet it will not kick in. Do you think I should have cranked the engine manually, to make certain oil was around the engine?

  • Cliff

The engine in my 2000 Kia Sportage has no power after I go over pass 30 mph. I know the gearbox is fine, but the engine just over raves when trying to go faster over that speed.

  • Danny

The gear changes on my 2008 Kia Magentas are very stiff, and not long after driving the engine management light comes up. I am wondering if the two are related in any way?

    2011 Ceed
just gone in on a recall for fuel tank strap, possible excessive rust ( strap ok) also a recall on a hydraulic brake hose issue. Some are showing signs of bulging. Mine were ok.

  • Jacky Derrick

    2011 Ceed
few weeks ago had EPS problem in that there wasn’t any power. Did clear by switching off ignition and then trying again, which seemed to sort it, until the day when I started to have to disconnect the battery and allow the system to reset itself. Took the car in under warranty and it needed to have a new steering column. All ok now.

  • Colin Carrick

hi, Ive a 2011 Ceed diesel estate automatic.. this morning while driving she basically cut out.. all dash lights came on EPS etc.. I cleared by switching off and back on and driving perfect now.. is this the start of a problem?.. any advise much appreciated mate. thanks

  • Jacky Derrick

The replacement steering column turned out to be faulty and a second one had to be fitted. The problem with the first replacement was that the EPS warnig light on the instrument cluster never illuminated on turning the ignition on. The car was returned to the dealer to check and I was fobbed off with “it`s a software update and there are no fault codes showing”. Didn’t believe this for a second, so, I contacted Kia tech and was told this is a fault and to return to the dealers. They gave me a reference no. for the dealers to contact them with. Subsequently this is when the new fault was found. I was told it was a communication fault. All seems to ok now except they have not put the steering wheel back straight and it’s irritating me. Will leave this now for them to correct at the next service. This goes to show how useful the 7 year warranty is. Just as well there are still more than 2 years left.

  • Jacky Derrick

    Hi Colin,
If I were you I would have your dealer check the steering column, as I had the same problem as you. This seems to be an ever increasing problem with Ceeds. When you get it back make sure the EPS light comes on with ignition and goes off when the engine starts. This is the normal condition. Anything else is a fault. You will see I have just posted that even with the the new steering column fitted I still had a problem. Don’t let them fob you off with feeble excuses. If you have to go back to Kia UK, they are more than happy to assist. you can get the contact details on their website. You definately have a fault. Good luck.

I have a Kia Sedona and for some reason the brake pedal goes straight to the floor, although it will go hard if I pump the pedal. I have bled the brakes and also made adjustments to the rear brakes, yet the problem still persists. I have also replaced the rear brake cylinders and made certain there are no leaks of any kind, and sill the pedal will go to the floor.

  • Shaun

The tyre wear on my Kia Picanto is a lot higher than it should be, and while the dealer is trying to say I have caused this by going over a bump or kerning it, this has not happened. I have since found out that the rear wheels are out of alignment and cannot be adjusted – is this correct?

  • Fionak

Hi Julie, was this ever resolved? I have a Sorento Kx3 (nov 2015), and I was stranded over the weekend due to this issue when the car lost power a number of times. Garage has had it since Monday and so far nothing. They even suggested it may be us driving with our foot on the brake pedal! Suffice to say, Mr Philpott (CEO) has had an email….

  • Jacob

My Kia Sedona is starting to get right on my nerves now. I can only get the engine to start if I squirt easy start in air filter, which is not very good. I just do not know what it is that can be causing this.

  • Kevin McTier

I have a Kia ceed 3 auto estate and have had it 8 months. It has a fault where after the brakes have warmed up there is a bad grinding knocking from the disc and pad drivers side .It has had all discs and pads replaced and 6 months later is back in for same problem. They have now reconditioned the steering rack .?????????? and are testing again tomorrow ,does this ring true with anyone as don’t think a rack will cure this .Thanks

  • Colin Carrick

    Hi Jacky,
I am still having huge trouble with my 2010 Kia Ceed 1.6 diesel Automatic. The car literally cuts out while driving and is extremely dangerous. I had car looked at by Kia Ireland who said they cannot find any fault. Can you advise me what to say to them or can you point me the right direction to figure out how to resolve this serious issue. Any information will be much appreciated.
    thanks Colin

  • Jack

I cannot understand why my 2002 Kia Sedona will only start when I squirt easy start in air filter? I have had it scanned, and even checked the live data for sensor output readings, but so far nothing. Has anyone else had this issue?

  • Ajmal Fahad

My vehicle kia carenc 2009 model this vehicles steering while cutting time its returning back why is it and how to resolve it

  • Justin

Please help, the electric windows at the rear of my Kia Sportage have stopped working. I was told by someone that it was the motors, as this was a common issue, but having changed them the issue still remain, which is very annoying. I wonder if it could be a fault with the wiring, or am I missing something far more obvious?

  • Tina

The instrument warning light cluster on my 2016 Kia Sedona, as all the lights come on and nothing on the dash works. I took it back to the dealer, where they said they managed to fit the issue. However, a week down the line and the same issue, so was wondering if this is a common fault?

  • Darrin Alker

Hi, I have a 2010 Kia Ceed 1.4. It seems the display over the center console has gone faulty, as it constantly shows the Boot as open, despite checking the rear boot is closed and I have gone over the connections and latch mechanism. Because the system thinks the boot is open, the central locking wont work as well as the Alarm. Also the dash wont light up when the lights are on and the digital display is very dimly lit to the point of barely being able to see the digits. All the main aspects of the car otherwise works, main lights, indicators, brake lights ect. It has got to the pont that the fault is draining the battery if left for more then 2 days Can you please help.

My power steering has gone as well, comes back when the engine is turned off / on again and then happily driving until i lose the power. It was really dangerous as i drove on country roads, very bendy to work and couldn’t control the car on a bend. Called the dealership who have said they haven’t heard of this as a problem even though I quoted different forums etc and National Tyre. Out of warranty by 6 months, so fingers crossed they don’t fleece me. Dropping the car off tomorrow evening at Marsh Kia Taunton and I’ll update the blog when they get back to me.

Hi, I have a Kia Sportage KX2 2L diesel which is now 11 months old and has now just topped 6000 miles. After a couple of months I noticed the car tended to wander from side to side and I had to keep correcting the steering wheel. I initially put this down to the design of the car after having BMW’s most of my life. It’s not serious enough to make the car change lanes but on a long journey and at speed it makes my arms ache as it won’t stay in a straight line without the constant correction. Has anyone experienced this problem or is it not a problem and just a characteristic of the Sportage.
