Lotus problems

When it comes to British sports cars, one name that pops into all of our minds is Lotus. The company is famous for just a handful of models, and we love how they have not confused us by coming up with many new ones.

Those models in question are the Elan, Elise, Esprit and Europa. The company is based in Norfolk, England on an old World War II airfield. What people love about these cars is that they are not overly complicated and has one purpose in mind, and that is to offer the ultimate driving experience in terms of handling.

Lotus was first formed in 1952 by Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman, which are also the initials in the brand logo. The company had a big presence in F1 back in the day and then started to sell cars to privateer racers and trialists.

It was only in the 70s that they got into road cars with the Lotus Elan Plus Two, and the rest as they say is history.

While these vehicles are well put together there are always going to be issues, such has the recall of several Lotus vehicles towards the end of last year. There was a problem with the oil cooler pipes, which if left unresolved could have caused a fire.

Thankfully, the recall fixed this issue, but we know Lotus owners have other problems they would like to share, which they can do so below.

    While I am very happy with my 2009 Lotus Elise in terms of the driving experience, I am a little unhappy with the number of stenotypes that have appeared on my bonnet just through normal driving.

    The drivers side light on my 2010 Evora has now been replaced three times because of moisture inside; surely it is about time Lotus got on top of this issue?

    Has anyone else had the recurring Lotus Elise starting problems? It does seem as though the Cobra alarm system is to blame, as it slowly drains the battery.

    When I first start up my 2011 Evora it sounds very rough and does not ideal very smoothly. And, when I first pull away it seems very jolty, up until the engine starts to get some temperature in it. Does this sound like a simple fix, or am I about to feel some pain from my wallet?

    Is it me or does the Lotus Elise seem to rattle a lot after having it from new after a few years?

    I currently own a Y reg Lotus Elise and while the handling is awesome, the same cannot be said for the build quality. I am now thinking of a new vehicle, so has Lotus finally got a handle on those build quality issues that had dogged them for years?

    I currently have no drivetrain. The gearbox is turning the prop shaft on my Lotus Elan, so gearbox is working, and the car has solid half shafts so surely it has to be diff related?

    There is something wrong with the AC on my Lotus Evora because when it is really hot outside and the car has been running for about 15 minutes, the air that comes from the vents is just cool air, but not cold how it should be. Surely the air coming from the vents should be a lot colder much quicker?

    I have been trying to remove a hex screw in the inlet manifold of my Lotus Elan engine, but I only had an imperial size allen key to try to remove it. However, the hex screw has now become damaged and now no matter what I try, I just cannot remove it. Could anyone please offer some advice on how I can remove this safely without damaging the thread?

    Hi, I was looking at getting myself a Lotus Elise, but I now have to decide if I go for the the Rover or Toyota engine? I’d just like to know, out of the two which is the better engine, and why?

    How come my lotus Elan seems to lack power? The car drives fine when taking it easy, but get it n a country road, and start to go through the gears, and it feels as though something is holding her back. I have made certain that there is no fuel starvation, and also the spark plugs and leads are fine.

    Is it just me or does the Lotus Exile lack power once it reaches 60 miles per hour? Getting there is very quick, but it all seems to slow down after that.

    I have had so many problems with my 2010 Lotus Evora, but the latest one is with the passenger window, as it does not seal as it should when the door is closed.
    In order to get it to seal I have to press the window in so that it can seal against the rubber seal. If I do not do this then there is wind noise and also rain can come in through the tiny gap.

    The heater on my Lotus Exile does not get as hot as I would like, but have been told that if I buy the correct fluid, then this could help increase the heat by at least 8 degrees Celcius – is this correct?

    Can anyone tell me what the Lotus Evora clutch replacement cost would be, as I would rather find an independent garage to do the work rather than the main dealer to save money?

    The pivot bolt on my Lotus Elise Accelerator has become loose, which has resulted in a partial throttle opening. No matter how much I try, I have been unable to realise this issue, does anyone have any tips for me?
