Volkswagen problems

Volkswagen might not be one of the oldest carmakers out there, but they are one of the most respected, especially when you consider they also own the likes of Audi, Lamborghini and even Bugatti. The company was established in 1937 and so has come a very long way in a short space of time.

Volkswagen problems

Because the company is so big and has a huge range of cars from the past and present, there are always going to be issues with certain models. It’s for this reason why we have this page, as we would very much like for you to share your Volkswagen problems with our readers.

Some of the cars that VW currently build are the Up!, Polo, Golf, Beetle, Passat, Scirocco, the Touareg and more.

One of the most recent VW recalls was due to a fuel leak on several of those models mentioned above from the 2014 and 2015 range, so even the newer models are not without their issues. If you have an issue of your own, then please add them to the comments section below.

I have a 58-reg VW Passat Diesel and for some reason it seems overly noisy on the motorway, is this a common problem, or is there an issue with my model?

  • Sally

I keep hearing a rattling noise from the engine of my 2104 Volkswagen Jetta and only makes the noise when going through the gears in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

  • Nick

It’s now the third time that the window actuator in my 2012 VW Beetle has had to be replaced, we know that the dealers knows this is a common issue, yet I keep having to get it replaced. Was there ever a recall for this problem?

  • Derrick

The oil light on my Volkswagen 2002 Jetta comes on every month and so needs to be filled up, I have a bad feeling that the bottom half of the engine needs to be rebuilt, but should I go to a cheaper, backstreet garage?

  • Sarah

Just heard that the NHSTA is to investigate the VW Passat for a possible electrical issue with its airbag, which is something to do with its steering-column control module.

  • Jake

Since purchasing my 2014 Golf, Volkswagen has changed the engine control unit several times, yet the issue still remain.

  • Matt

Has anyone else experienced an issue where you could not move the transmission out of park? Te car in question is a 2006 VW Touareg. I was told by one person it could be a fault with the N376 Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid’, is this correct?

  • Jane

The catalytic convertor lights keeps coming on my 2010 VW Polo, could someone please tell me what it is I should do?

  • Jackie

Why do I need to keep pumping the accelerator on my 2006 Volkswagen Touran in order for it to start?

  • Mel

After changing the belt on my alternator, the accelerator cable on my 1999 VW Bora has become stiff, which does seem very strange. I am wondering if any of the two are linked, such as the cable being too close to the belt?

  • Kate

My 2001 VW Polo was working fine one minute, but when I had to park up for a couple of hours I came back to find that it would not start. The lights on the dashboard come on, and I can here the fan, but it will not start at all.

  • Tommy

I have a 2000 VW Passet, which was working like a dream until one day, and without warning the engine started to hunt. This means it no longer maintains a perfect RPM while idling and while go up and down. I replaced the gasket as advised, also the rocker gasket and coils packs, but still the issue persists. What makes it even more annoying, part from the rising cost, it will try to stall when I pull away, unless I maintain anything over 2,500 revs.

  • George

Ever since I had the nearside gaiter replaced on my VW Touran the steering now feels far too light and seems to wander across the road. That’s not the only issue because when you turn while going round a slight bend in the road you can feel the car wishes to pull the other way, which can often make driving a bit of a chore.

The gaiter has been checked, and it has been fitted correctly, so I am now at a loss as to what the issue could be.

  • Del

My Volkswagen often struggles to get up to speed, and there are times when it just stops and conks out. The most times the engine stalls is when going in reverse, which I find especially strange.

  • Sam

I love my old VW Polo, and she still drives like a dream. However, when I come to a halt the revs fluctuate while idling. I have made certain that the carb is cleaned, and also the fuel filter. The spark plugs and leads have been changed, and I am now out of ideas. Does anyone else have any other suggestions for me to try?

  • Paul

Am I the only one that now wonders how VW till treat us owners with an affected vehicle in the diesel engine scandal? For years we have been driving with a car that has been pumping out more emissions than it should, which in turn means that we have been consuming too much fuel. Do you plan on taking things further, or wait to see what the UK Government plans to do to help us out and bring Volkswagen to task?

  • Kate

I have an issue with the gearbox in my 2003 VW Golf, as it will not drive backwards unless I over accelerate, which does make me sound either like a learner or old person driving. What could cause such a thing to happen,

  • Jules

Not happy, and I have now heard that another engine could have used this cheat software, and from the looks of it my model would be affected. I do not fancy my chances of selling this vehicle, not until the problem has been addressed.

  • Elvin

When I drive over 30 miles per hour my VW Golf engine makes a strange high pitch noise. it will not get any louder the faster I go over 30, it just stays the same high pitch.

  • Karen

A strange issue has occurred with my 2006 VW Golf heater, as it will now only work on the number 4 setting, and nothing else. Does anyone have an idea what it could be?

  • Toby

There is a strange creaking noise coming from the wheel arch of my VW Polo, bit only when I go over bumps or did in the road while driving slow. I am not certain what could be the cause of the problem.

  • James

For some reason I can no longer open the boot and passenger side door, or even the fuel cap. Would could be causing this to happen?

  • Poppy

The windows and doors will not open on my VW Polo. It had been parked for several days during a bad rain spell, but have checked over all fuses, and they are fine. However, there is a damp patch in the boot, nit sure f that helps at all?

  • Jacob

This does not happen all the time, but on occasions when I take my foot of the accelerator, the engine on my VW golf 1.6 TDi will often stay at the same speed, or even speed up slightly for a short period of time before starting to slow down. This has caught be unaware a few times, although I was quick enough to react.

When I took it back to the dealer so they could take it fir a test drive to see what was happening, the issue never happened from them, which is just typical. However, the problem has since returned and I just do not know what to do.

  • Paul

The front passenger on my VW Passat has stopped working. When I use the key fob it will not open from the outside, although it does when I unlock the car from the inside – which is very strange.

  • Martin

Just started up mu 2003 Volkswagen Passat and it sounds as though it is only running on three cylinders. The issues I have is that it judders and there is a loss of power. I have put new plugs in, and also the leads, but still the thing continues to run very rough indeed.

  • Jules

Oh dear, I have a Volkswagen DSG problem with my 2015 Golf model. It’s almost as though it is hesitant before changing gear. What’s the cheapest way to resolve this issue?

  • Hannah

My 2014 VW Jetta is not sniffing correctly, and there are times as though it has been put in neutral. I have since taken it to my local Volkswagen dealer, but they have been unable to recreate the issue – any ideas please?
