Volvo problems

Volvo was first founded in 1927 with its headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. There are many aspects to the company, although it is the car company that we are more interested in. The company has been through many transitions and been owned by several other carmakers, with Ford being one of them.

Volvo problems

We know that when it comes to Volvo you do not really associate them with having too many problems, but these cars are not bulletproof and from time to time there will be issues, and we ask that you share those issues with us.

The good thing is, we hardly ever see Volvo vehicles being recalled, but that is not to say it will not happen, especially when they rely on some third-party components, such as Honda and Toyota did with those Takata airbag inflators.

If you do have any issues with your Volvo, then please share them in the comments section below.

The cruise control sensor on my 2006 Volvo S60 has failed, is this something I can fix or is it better to go to a dealer?

  • Martin

For some reason my 2008 Volvo XC60 does not cool as well as it should do. I’m worried that my engine could fail, what could be the cause?

  • Mick

I know that this is nothing to do with a car problem, but has anyone else had an issue logging in with their Volvo ID?

  • Mary

When I turned the engine off on my Volvo 460 CVT for some reason the throttle valve closed and will not open once I try to turn the engine over.

  • Norman

The climate control unit has stopped working on my 2006 Volvo V70, so all I get is cold air blowing from the vents when Ac is turned on, or hot when the heater is selected. Volvo says this unit cannot be fixed and so needs to replace the whole lot, at a price of around £700.

  • Dave

I keep getting a bad smell from the air con in my 2012 Volvo S60, and it would seem there is an issue with the filter. It took several letters to Volvo, but they finally took responsibility, so you keep at them if you have the same issue.

  • Derek

What would cause the engine in my 2001 Volvo V70 to shale wile in reverse?

  • Kevin

The turbo on my Volvo S40 has given up the ghost. Now I know the entire part will need to be replaced, but is this a job I can do myself to save a few quid?

  • Desmond

When I first start my 2002 Volvo V70 the engine display panel works fine, but in less than a minute everything begins to display wrong and then the display goes out.

  • Kevin

I have a 2009 Volvo V50 and when the engine is cold it tends to smoke a lot, and sounds like a bag of spanners. However, once warm the issues disappear. I have since replaced four injectors and the sensor, but the issue seems to persist.

  • Martin

My S40 runs idles just how it should, but once I begin to bring in a few revs a horrible noise like marbles comes from the engine. The noise is not constant, as it pasts for a few seconds, then goes, and returns a few seconds later.

  • Sue

Every now and then a strange rattling noise comes from under my Volvo V50. The best way to describe the sound is as though I have ran over something. However, the sound is not there all the time, and so comes and goes – something which is a pain when taking it to the dealer to diagnose, as they have yet to hear the noise.

  • Dave

I think that my Volvo 850 is being starved of fuel. The reason I say this is because when I start the car it will tick over fine, but the moment I put my foot on the assertor it cuts out. The strange thing is, I have cleaned the fuel filter out, and also made certain the fuel pump is working. I now fear that it could be an issue with the carb.

  • Helen

I’m getting a bit angry with a warning light on my Volvo V70, as it says one of the doors has been left open, when clearly it is not. The light will only go out once I have parked the car and turned the eying off. Although after about 10 mins of driving, the damn thing comes on again.

  • Jamie

Help, My 2002 Volvo S60 will not start, and before you ask the battery is fully charged. When I turn the key all I get is a clicking noise. Do you think this could be the starter motor, although I though when this goes you get a strange screaming noise?

  • Stuart

I’m a bit confused because the passenger side of my Volvo V70 is always cold. I know that the settings are independent of each side, so I can only assume that there is an issue with the controls on the passenger side, but where would I start in trying to fix the problem?

  • Aron

Why is it that my Volvo 850 has issues when starting from cold? If I have been driving for just a few miles the engine will cut out, although if I then wait a few minutes and restart the engine runs perfectly fine.

  • David

The other day I tried to fold the seat down in my Volvo S40, and in the process broke the catch. I can no longer release the seat, but in order to replace the catch I need to fold the seat back down, which I cannot do. I have tried everything to release the catch, but to no avail – any suggestions welcome.

  • Grant

There has been a sudden loss of power from my 2004 Volvo S40. The car idles just as it should, and I can hear the gear engaging, yet when I go to pull away there is a huge lag, and have to compensate with applying even more throttle. The car is also unable to reach the top speed in some of the lower gears, but uncertain if the higher gears because that would be breaking the speed limit.

  • Spencer

I have washed so many car engines with a jet wash and had no issues, but the moment I did it with my Volve S40 the engine no longer starts how it should. When it does manage to start it sounds very rough – is there a chance water has entered any filters – or worse?

  • Kyle

Now that I have replaced the headlight bulbs on my Volvo S60, the tilt control no longer works. I did not touch the mechanism in any way, so why would it just stop working all of a sudden?

  • Anthony

I just cannot understand why I am unable to deactivate the immobiliser on my Volvo 440. Ok, so I know this car is now 15 years old, but there should be a way for me to rest it or something, or would this defeat the purpose of the device, and so will have to take it into Volvo?

  • Derek

When I first start my Volvo S40 it will run very rough for the first few miles, and then begin to run smoothly. And so, I am asking for any help please.

  • Kayley

Ok, so I know my 2001 Volvo V70 is getting on a bit now, but I keep it served every year, but just a bit gutted that the kick down is slow to respond, and seems to now be slipping between 2nd and 3rd. I am not really sure what step I should take next, such as trying to see if it is an easy fix, go to a main dealer or even try to use an independent garage.

  • Graham

Why is it that my Volvo 440 is unable to start in cold conditions. When the weather is warm the car runs like a dream, but the moment it gets near freezing the car takes ages to start, and also runs very rough – a bit like an old ford did back in the day.

  • Karl

Does anyone know why on earth the roof alarm on my 2003 Volvo C70 will go off for no reason? I could be driving along and it will go off, or evening when stationary with the car running. I have turned the heated rear-screen on, which stops the alarm, so that does not sound very good right?

  • Maxine

My Volvo V70 2002 has problems with its automatic transmission, as the shifts between each gear is very hard and more often than not very erratic. I have made certain that the oil has been changed in the gearbox, but the issue keeps happening.

  • John

I ended up scrapping a low mileage car due to the immobiliser…

  • Kev

Only just found out that my 2016 Volvo S90 is part of a recall due to its retaining bolts used to assemble the Inflatable Curtain could be broken, and so would offer less protection in the event of an incident.
